What is Time to Read?

Time to Read (German: Lesezeit) is a reading tracker for iOS and Android. You add books to your library, start a timer when you read, and the app tracks how long you spent, what pages you covered, and how your reading habit develops over time. When you come across a passage worth remembering, you capture it – either by typing or by pointing your camera at the page.

The app is built around a simple idea: most people want to read more, but they don't have a clear picture of how much they actually read. Time to Read makes that visible. Not with gamification or social pressure, but with honest data: minutes read, pages turned, streaks maintained.

The app is free, ad-free, and requires no account. Available for iPhone (iOS 17+) and Android (8.0+).

Who is it for?

For people who read books and want to read more of them. The typical user reads a few books a year and wishes it were more. They've tried setting reading goals before – "read 20 books this year" – but lost track by February. They need something that makes reading progress visible without turning it into a chore.

Time to Read is also for people who collect quotes and passages. If you're the kind of reader who underlines sentences, dog-ears pages, or scribbles notes in margins, this app gives you a place to keep all of that digitally. You can search your notes later – not just by keyword, but by meaning.

It's not for people who want a social reading platform like Goodreads, a book recommendation engine, or an e-reader. Time to Read doesn't care what you think about a book. It cares that you're reading. If you want reviews, ratings, and reading lists curated by others, there are better apps for that. This one is about your reading, your data, your habits.

How does reading tracking work?

Open the app, select the book you're reading, and tap the timer. Read. When you're done, stop the timer. The app records your reading session: start time, duration, start page, and end page. That's it.

On iOS, the timer shows as a Live Activity on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can see it running without opening the app. You can pause and resume at any time – if someone interrupts you, pause the timer, come back later, and pick up where you left off. The app tracks active reading time separately from pause time.

Over time, your sessions build a picture: how many minutes you read per day, your average reading speed, which books took the longest, and how consistent you are. The app shows this in simple charts – no complicated dashboards, just clear data about your reading behavior.

Your library

Search millions of books from the OpenLibrary database and add them to your library with a tap. You can also look up books by ISBN or add them manually if they're not in the database. Each book gets a status: Currently Reading, Want to Read, or Finished.

The library is your reading history. Every book you've tracked, every session you've logged, every quote you've captured – it's all there, organized by book. You can see how long each book took, how many sessions it required, and when you finished it.

There's no limit to how many books you can add. Your library grows with you.

Notes, quotes, and OCR

When you find a passage worth saving, you have two options: type it in, or scan it. Point your camera at the book page and the app uses OCR (optical character recognition) to extract the text. No retyping, no photos of pages – clean, searchable text.

Each note is linked to a book and optionally to a page number. You can browse all notes for a book or search across your entire collection. The search is semantic – it understands context, not just exact words. Search for "hope" and it finds quotes about hope even if the word doesn't appear in them. This works entirely on your device, offline, with no cloud processing.

Notes and quotes are one of the most underrated features of reading. Most people forget the details of books they've read. Time to Read gives you a personal, searchable archive of everything that resonated with you.

Reading goals and streaks

Set goals that match how you want to read. Daily minutes ("I want to read 30 minutes a day"), weekly minutes, books per month, or books per year. The app tracks your progress and shows how close you are to each goal.

When you meet your daily goal, your streak extends. Streaks track consecutive days of meeting your reading target. The app marks milestones at 7, 14, 30, 100, and 365 days. If your streak is at risk – it's evening and you haven't read yet – the app can send a reminder.

The goal system is deliberately simple. No badges, no points, no levels. Just a number that goes up when you read and resets when you don't. That's enough motivation for most people – and it's honest. A 30-day streak means you actually read for 30 days, not that you gamed some system.

Smart notifications

Time to Read sends context-aware reminders. A morning greeting when you usually read before work. A lunchtime nudge if that's when you take a reading break. An evening reminder if your streak is at risk. The notifications adapt to your patterns, not the other way around.

When you hit a milestone – finishing a book, reaching a streak goal, completing your yearly target – the app celebrates quietly. A notification, not a fanfare. No social sharing prompts, no "tell your friends" popups.

You can turn off any or all notifications. The app works perfectly fine without them.

What Time to Read is not

This is not a social reading platform. There are no friends, no followers, no book reviews, and no recommendations. It doesn't tell you what to read. It tracks what you do read.

It's not an e-reader. You can't read books inside the app. It's a companion to your reading, whether you read physical books, on a Kindle, or in any other app. It tracks the time you spend, not the content you consume.

It's not a book database or catalog. While you can search and add books from OpenLibrary, the app isn't designed for browsing, discovering, or rating books. The library exists to organize your reading sessions and notes, not to replace Goodreads or a bookstore app.

It solves a specific problem: knowing how much you read and building a consistent habit. If after six months you've built that habit and don't need a tracker anymore, that's the best success Time to Read can have.

Was ist Lesezeit?

Smarte Benachrichtigungen

Lesezeit sendet kontextbewusste Erinnerungen.

Sie erfasst, was du liest.
